Busy weekend for me. Yesterday, I drove out to Ohio to the Brakim racing HQ (the guys building a gravel Lambo) to pick up some e36 parts. S52 cams, M50 intake, Turner underdrive pulleys, and some electric fans.
I also finished pulling my rear subframe.
Huge pain in the ass, but it had to be done. I’m adding reinforcing plates to the subframe mounting points, since they’re another weak spot on this chassis (really the whole rear suspension... trailing arm and shock mount have already been done since they’re even more common failure points. WTF BMW?).
Once that’s in, I’ll be putting in my biggest upgrade yet:
An M3 diff! I can’t wait to race with it. I’ll be going from a 2.93 open diff to a 3.23 clutch LSD. I just need to swap the input flange, since M3s had different driveshafts than peasant 3s.
Finally, I did fluids. New engine, trans, and diff oil. The trans oil is technically a lifetime fluid MTF-L1, but earlier ZFs just used ATF with something like 40,000 miles between changes. It was black when it came out...
STPR feels like it’s right around the corner, but I’m working hard to be ready with plenty of time to spare.

how bad was it to get the subframe out with the control arms unbolted from the inside? I’ve done it once on my e46, but I pulled the drive axles and pulled it it with the control arms attached instead. I felt like that would be easier than unbolting the inner control arms.

Really annoying, but it would be easier with more people. I had to position myself to push on both hubs to get the uppers and lowers to clear the pockets on the subframe so it would come out.
I tried removing the lower arm from the hub, but they’re rusted pretty well together
